The law firm of Murphy & McGonigle, P.C. announced today that it has completed the next phase of its transition to new leadership reflecting the firm’s continued growth and evolution since its founding by Thomas J. McGonigle and James A. Murphy in 2010. As previously noted, Elizabeth Lan Davis officially took the reins as the new Chair of the firm on September 1, 2021 [LINK]. The firm’s Executive Committee also has been reconstituted to give the firm’s next generation of leaders a greater voice in the firm’s direction. The firm has tapped New York partner Sharon O’Shaughnessy to serve as the firm’s new Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
The planned leadership transition allows Mr. Murphy to depart the firm, effective December 31, 2021, to pursue his interests in blockchain and Web3 projects as a strategic advisor, thought-leader and venture capital investor. Mr. McGonigle will continue in his role as founder and partner.
The firm’s Chair, Ms. Davis, commented "James has been an important leader in our firm, who helped create and build the firm to what we are today. His departure serves as a great example of stewardship, reflecting his confidence in our partnership, the opportunities for future growth and the strength of his legacy. We thank him for his many contributions and warm professionalism. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
About his departure, Mr. Murphy commented: "It truly has been a wonderful ride these past 11 years. It has been the great honor of my professional life to be associated with some of the most talented lawyers and staff anywhere. We built an All-Star team here starting from scratch in 2010. I never would have imagined that we would get to a place where our peers and clients would rate us among the very best in the country at what we do. I will leave with a feeling of immense gratitude for our clients who supported us when we were an unknown upstart and all along the way as we have grown our footprint to Washington D.C., New York, Chicago and San Francisco." He added that "the best part is I can move on to my next chapter secure in the knowledge that the firm will continue in great hands under Elizabeth’s capable leadership."
Mr. McGonigle added, "When James and I founded the firm more than a decade ago, we took great pride in creating a firm comprised of an all-star team of financial services lawyers across the country who deliver top level legal advice, hands-on service, and cost efficiencies to clients. Our growth and evolution over the years underscores the power of this vision. James has been a great partner and colleague to all of us and we are confident he will have great success in his future work."
